'Budding' Scientists!

Today our challenge was to look a little more closely at flowering plants, so we put on our 'lab coats' and got stuck in!

We were allowed to take the plants out of their pots to examine the roots. There were lots of them! Can you remember why plants have roots?

Each part of the plant was under close inspection with the help of some magnifying glasses!

We recorded some useful words on the white board ready to help us with our labelling:

Callum thought it might be a maggot!

We used a ruler to add the labels once we had finished our drawings:

Unusual plants

Yesterday, the Wrens were visited by Mr Squirrell

who works at a plant nursery in Suffolk.

He brought in lots of different and unusual plants to show us.

We asked him lots of different questions and he asked us some too!

We got to smell some different herbs. 


These are carniverous plants which eat small insects!

 

   We liked the Venus fly traps!  Annalise asked,
      "How does the plant know when there is a fly because it doesn't have eyes?"

           So Mr Squirrell explained how it uses tiny hairs to sense when a fly lands on it.  It takes it about a week to 'eat' a fly!



We had fun pretending to be fly catchers!

Amber and Ria are looking at the fly that this plant has already caught.

This plant could grow to be as tall as our classroom!

           We got to have a close up look at the plants at our tables
            and drew them carefully.  We added labels to our
             pictures and thought about which plant we liked the best.

I had lots of fun smelling the plants.

I  liked the venus fly  trap because they catch flys.

Sage   smells  luvle    because   you can cooking  with it.

  Mr Squirrell has let us keep some different carniverous plants

and he told us how to take good care of them.
